Butte Water District (BWD) was proposed, organized, and formed 1952. It is a California Water District formed and is responsible for providing irrigation water to agricultural water users within its service area boundary. BWD is committed to an open and inclusive process of implementing SGMA in the Butte Subbasin in coordination with other GSAs.

At the time of their GSA formation, the portions of the BWD service area and GSA boundaries described herein were within the East Butte subbasin. As a result, the original decision to become a GSA and other supporting documentation describe this subbasin. Since the formation of the Butte subbasin in 2019, the BWD service area and GSA boundaries within the East Butte subbasin are now within the Butte subbasin. In addition to the BWD Service Area, the GSA Boundary includes the Thermalito Afterbay and canals used to convey water from the Thermalito Afterbay.
