B. Description of Proposed Boundary Modification
-
This BBM request proposes to modify portions of the southern and western boundary of the Kern County Groundwater Subbasin (5-22.14).
-
- Scientific External
-
This BBM request proposes to modify portions of the southern and western boundary of the Kern County Groundwater Subbasin (5-22.14). The current boundary is mapped at the contact of the QPc or younger rocks (Q) with Miocene (M) or older units. The proposed boundary generally follows the contact between the Quaternary alluvium (Q and Qoa) and older rocks, including QPc, as mapped by Jennings (2010). There is little to no beneficial use of groundwater in the area of the proposed modification due to poor water quality, and recharge of fresh water in the subbasin originates predominately from the east (DWR, 2003; Wood & Davis, 1959). Thus, this basin boundary modification request will not negatively impact the sustainability of the Kern County Subbasin. Eliminating areas that do not function as part of the groundwater subbasin will allow for more efficient and effective management of groundwater resources and the basin boundary as proposed herein will more correctly align with the mapped edge of unconsolidated alluvial deposits.
